A wonderful later copy of a Josef Hoffmann Sitzmaschine armchair. We are yet to find another copy of this famous piece, so the making of this item is a mystery. Purchased from a house clearance shop in Paris. I’ve been enjoying this chair for the last couple of years with a slight reluctance to sell it. Josef Hoffman was one of the most prominent modern architects and designers of the early 20th century. He was a founder and pioneering member of the Viennese Succession and Wiener Werkstatte, creating the modern language of Art Deco. His Sitzmaschine armchair (or ‘machine for sitting’) was originally designed for his Purkersdorf Sanatorium in Vienna. The chair was one of his first successful attempts to unify the design of the building with its furniture.
